I've been involved in video production for over 12 years, as a writer, director, cinematographer and editor across a range of forms (e.g. documentary, advertising, educational, corporate etc.). Even over that comparatively short period of time, I've seen quite a few changes, both in terms of the technology used to produce video, as well as the way in which it may now be distributed and shown to the world at large.
What this means is that businesses and organisations large and small now have the ability to produce professional video productions at low cost, with fast turnaround, and can use this form of advertising across a range of mediums, whether it be on websites, TV, industry expos and more. I've single-handedly produced hundreds of online video commercials for example, some of which have later been re-purposed for television broadcast and as corporate videos.
Having met and produced work for hundreds of business owners, from small corner stores and niche providers to huge companies, I have an understanding of how best to make a video commercial work for your particular need. Many times I've heard "but what we do is too boring - who'd want to watch a video about XYZ?" But the internet is a different medium to that of TV, which carries a highly generalised, passive and non-specific audience. When people come to your website, or search for terms that are relevant to your product or service, they are active and directed. This means that at least on some level they will more inclined to be interested in your product or service. What they won't be inclinded to do is trawl through a bunch of web copy looking for answers. They want the story. They want to know what you do and whether you can meet their particular need.
In that way, your online user is very specific and self-directed. And that is one reason that video is the medium that has proven to be exceptionally effective. It not only encapsulates what you can offer (in a more impactful aesthetic than mere text), but can give your audience a much greater sense of reality and identity in terms of what you really are. So it builds trust, delivers a message (as well as information) that stays in the mind longer, and also a sense of familiarity. All of these are crucial to any successful business. Having always had a love of cinematography, it's pretty obvious that I also appreciate still photography as well. With more and more clients demanding high-quality professional photography, this moved from being something I did purely for my own enjoyment and interest, to one in which I was expected to produce commercial quality photography for all kinds of industries.
This can include the obligatory product shots, where the client simply wants a collection of their products (sometimes hundreds) shot in a simple high-key catalogue style, for display either in both online stores and in print catalogues. Then of course there are all sorts of other photographic treatments that are used for different forms of subjects - fashion, portraiture, location/action shots - the list goes on and on. Another interest of mine that developed into a profession is in the world of design, both in terms of the web, print and motion graphics. I produce everything in this field from websites to advertising flyers, brochures, posters and more.
Design of course is a critical aspect of business advertising and representing your business identity to the world. But it doesn't have to be expensive or difficult, and often it just takes some good instincts and common sense to sort out how your design can most effectively communicate to your audience.
With a background in computer science, including web design, I also know how to make a design functional in the web environment.
